The Liberland Metaverse is named after the real micronation, Free Republic of Liberland, which lies between Croatia and Serbia. The virtual world is meant to serve as a template and aid in the development of the physical Liberland, and people who buy plots of land in the virtual city will also have a stake in the physical one.

According to its dedicated website, the ZHA-designed Metaverse is intended to serve as “a virtual industry synergy and networking hub for crypto projects, crypto companies, and crypto events.” The virtual world will feature structures in Zaha Hadid Architects’ distinct curvaceous futuristic design with some installations seen floating and defying traditional structural rules that are needed for the real world. Locations currently on display include the DeFi Plaza, city hall, and exhibition center.

Zaha Hadid Architects principal Patrik Schumacher believes that virtual and physical environments are ideally designed together. “As long as we have physical bodies we’ll need physical environments,” he said in an interview with dezeen. “Virtual environments are as real as physical environments and social reality exists and continues seamlessly across this divide.”
