The Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) is facing severe criticism for fostering a toxic environment at the Arfa Software Technology Park (ASTP), where visitors, workers, students, and faculty members of the Information Technology University (ITU) have been subjected to microaggressions and unpleasant behavior by security staff.
Reports have surfaced of security personnel ridiculing and making visitors and staff feel uncomfortable, denying lawful entry, and even rounding them up. The most alarming aspect is that the PITB has not only tolerated but allegedly encouraged this behavior.
In a shocking incident, Dr. Imdad Hussain, a faculty member at ITU, was barred from entering the Arfa Tower on September 13 without any explanation. Despite repeated requests, the PITB has failed to provide a written ban letter or justify the reason for Dr. Hussain’s entry ban. As a result, the professor has been forced to conduct classes outside the university, affecting over 30 students.
The students are now planning to protest against the PITB’s unlawful ban, sparking concerns about the board’s commitment to providing a safe and inclusive environment.
Located in Lahore, the Arfa Software Technology Park is Pakistan’s largest Information and Communications Technology Park, established to promote the IT industry and entrepreneurship. However, the current controversy raises questions about the PITB’s ability to manage this facility effectively.
The PITB must address these concerns and take immediate action to rectify the situation, ensuring that the Arfa Software Technology Park becomes a hub for innovation and learning, rather than hostility and intimidation.
